George was born in Cassville, New Jersey. From a letter from his mother:
"On April 9, 1942 while abandoning Bataan in small boats
going to Corregidor (P.I.) a heavy explosion threw large
boulders out into Marviveles Bay as the evacuation boats
were leaving. One large boulder struck a boat, killed three
men and one officer and broke the boat in half. Phifer was
one of the men killed." |
